The Nintendo Switch’s successor may no longer be releasing in 2024 as previously reported, with the system now being targeted for a Q1 2025 launch. Brazilian reporter Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe initially reported that Nintendo had pushed the system back to the January – March window of 2025.
That report cited third-party developers who were now expecting to release their games for the system in Q1 2025. Eurogamer added that it had heard similar indications from developers. And now has VGC followed up to report it, too, has heard from sources who say Nintendo has told the system’s release has shifted from late 2024 to early 2025.
Back in August 2023, developers reportedly were shown the capabilities of the Switch successor behind closed doors at Gamescom. Furthermore, Activision Blizzard reportedly met with Nintendo executives back in 2022 to discuss how to bring Call of Duty to the new platform.
Nintendo launched the Switch back in March 2017 to great success, and it may seem like the company is trying to make lightning strike twice. Launching in the first quarter also has the benefit of still being within Nintendo’s current fiscal year.
Nintendo usually has a hefty lineup of enticing games coming out soon, but 2024 seems a bit lighter than usual, with Switch ports of Paper Mario: A Thousand Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2. Princess Peach: Showtime is releasing in March and Metroid Prime 4 is still in development.
With a rumored Nintendo Direct coming soon, more games and release dates could help fill in the otherwise thin release calendar. In the meantime, Xbox is helping to fill those gaps by bringing over four of its first-party games to Switch in the near future.
