Lego didn’t need to go this hard when it made this 2,532-piece Atari 2600 set in honor of the game company’s 50th anniversary, but we’re very happy that it did. And right now, this Lego Atari 2600 tribute is on sale at Best Buy for $167.99 (was $239.99), which is one of the lowest prices we’ve seen since the set’s debut last year.
It would’ve been great enough just to remake the console itself, with its intricate wood and plastic paneling, switchboard, and joystick. But Lego went even further for this set, throwing in three diorama scenes in honor of the classic games Adventure, Asteroids, and Centipede — each of which is also represented as a replica cartridge. There’s also a “hidden” diorama within the console itself that channels a 1980s living room. The attention to detail here is phenomenal, and makes for a great display.
All that’s missing is a Lego CRT screen — which actually does exist, albeit as part of the Lego NES set (not currently on sale, alas). And if you’re looking for a working Atari, may we suggest the Atari 2600+ or upcoming Atari 7800+, both of which are HDMI-ready and can play existing cartridges.
