After six years of ongoing support, State of Decay developer Undead Labs has announced that State of Decay 2 is coming to an end when it comes to new content updates. The studio is now shifting its focus to State of Decay 3, which the company says is aiming to be the “greatest zombie survival sim” in the series so far.

State of Decay 2 has had nearly 40 updates and expansions that added more modes, maps, story content, characters, weapons, and cosmetics over the years. Undead Labs said it has “poured our hearts into making the experience the best it can be.” But the time has come to move on and look ahead.

“Our ambition is to make the greatest zombie survival sim in the franchise, and to do so, we’ll be shifting our focus and resources to making the upcoming third installment, State of Decay 3,” Undead Labs said.

The final content update for State of Decay 2, which is the game’s 38th update, is coming later this year, and it will address some of the game’s “longstanding issues” and add quality-of-life improvements. Additionally, the update will permanently unlock seasonal content for everyone.

Undead Labs also confirmed that State of Decay 2 will remain online and available for people who bought the game outright or are playing it through Xbox Game Pass. Save games will remain intact. Undead Labs will no longer accept bug reports, as the studio is closing its support system for State of Decay 2.

Many are naturally wondering when State of Decay 3 will come out, but Undead Labs isn’t ready to say just yet, saying more information will come “at a later time.”

“Thank you for your continued support and for being the greatest gaming community there is. We’re excited to devote ourselves to making the next game even better,” the studio said.

State of Decay 3 was announced in 2020, but to date, there hasn’t been much information disclosed about it. Check out a cinematic trailer above to get a look at State of Decay 3.
